Polyline and Other Placement Tools

While placing assets one at a time is an essential method of adding context to any scene (and particularly easy in Beyond CAD), single placement isn’t practical for projects of large scale. To make placement of assets as easy as possible, we’ve created a handful of tools that can populate even the largest of infrastructure projects in a fraction of the time.

While you may have seen brush or line placement tools in a 3D visualization engine before, you probably haven’t seen anything like the polyline placement tool and we can’t wait for you to try it out.

Single asset Placement

Traditional asset placement but with a twist (or two)

As quickly as you can click you left mouse button assets can be placed, one at a time. They will follow the elevation of imported 3D meshes to minimize z-axis adjustments later on.

When vegetation and rocks are placed each will have rotation and size randomly adjusted (size between 0.8 and 1.2). This makes for a much more organic feel without additional adjustments.

If adjustments are necessary, the transform widget allows for quick movement relocations or rotations. The Organize tab allows for scaling and more precise adjustments.

Brush Placement Tool

Scatter placement of assets at scale

Especially useful for trees, and other vegetation, the brush placement tool quickly and efficiently places assets- all while following terrain elevation.

Adjust the brush width, spawn gap, and frequency as well as the minimum and maximum scale for added variety of placed assets. A counter will let you know how many assets have been placed before you confirm.

Before confirming placement of brush-placed assets you can invert the brush and subtract just as easily as the assets were placed. This is especially helpful for getting rid of trees that accidentally landed on roads or other areas they shouldn’t be.

Line Placement Tool

Placement of assets along a straight line

Whether you are placing cars in a parking lot, street lights along a corridor or trees in a forest the line tool can provide surprising functionality and efficiency due to the variety of settings available including gap size and variation, base rotation, random rotation, random offset and more.

Auto-placement on elevation, in-order on/off and other little settings make the line tool especially useful.

Polyline Placement Tool

Placement of assets along a polyline

With all of the functionality of the line tool but along a multi-point line, the polyline tool is the asset placement tool infrastructure projects have been begging for for years. Place construction barriers around a corner, place street lights up a winding road or place houses in a cul-de-sac with the appropriate curvature.

Adjust the gap size and variation, base rotation, random rotation, random offset and other settings including having the assets keep the rotation or follow the rotation of the curve. It is likely that you will love this tool!

Terrain Following

Each of the four asset placement tools follow the terrain by default allowing for rapid population of scenes with library assets.

Small or Large

Whether your project is small or large the placement tools can be adjusted to work with the scale of your project.

Counting Tracker

A tracker will show how many assets will be placed before the placement is confirmed thus allowing review if too many assets may be placed to slow down project.

Future Updates

Future updates to placement tools will clean up UI, smooth out workflows and allow for use of these tools with imported assets.
